DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, five-minute repeater with chronograph, 16J, mvt with 14S rear plate design but with 18S dial and case diameter, heavy 14K gold original BWCCo OF case, initials on rear, gold cuvette engraved "William Harvey Rider from his wife Clara Anna, New Years, 1883," repeat function activated by slide on band, chronograph function activated by button on band, fancy white enamel SS canister style (snap-on) dial with multicolor floral detail around center, gold foil decoration around hour chapter, red glass dots at 5-minute positions and blue minute numerals, SW-LS, fishscale pattern nickel damascene, s#2531506. Gross weight of assembled watch 101.5 dwt (157.9 g). A beautiful overall example of this rare watch highlighted by an eye-catching fancy dial that is seldom seen among Waltham repeater production. Dr. William Harvey River of Danbury, Connecticut was born in 1854 and married his wife Clara Anna Raymond in 1878. Dr. Rider was an active dentist in Danbury for 61 years, joining his father in the business in 1874 and carrying on the family practice until his retirement in January, 1936.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good though rapid repeat function with a somewhat subdued tone, good chronograph function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, balance cock with some fine scratches and small surface nicks, balance jewel setting with a mismatched screw; dial with hl above seconds-register and a light hl between center and edge at 11:30; fine hands, hour hand is broken near its mid-point and has had an extending segment connected to its remaining portion; case shows very little wear, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail; tight bow thinned at top, crown shows medium wear with ridge break; glass crystal with scattered surface nicks.
